...And before someone says this is just about my taste: Yes, it is. But unlike others I don't think songwriting is something objective. If you can master a certain style of songwriting is objective. If you like that style of songwriting, or find that this style of songwriting or think that it is good songwriting, that is the thing that is subjective. Writing songs after the normal scheme is a style of songwriting. But IMO it's not good songwriting if you can do that. And so Dream Theaters solo manias spoil their songwriting a bit. This is not to say their songwriting would be bad, not at all! Just not as good as the other two and Arjen is the king of songwriters anyway
